The Heil Heritage Microphone. …sounds as good as it looks.

In the spirit of the Holidays, we look at a microphone that brings to mind the past, with technology from the future. …or at least present

Bob Heil demands great sound from his microphones, but he also likes them to be eye catching. I caught a glimpse of the Heritage microphone and had to try it out.

If you have tried a Heil PR (professional) series PR-20, you’ll have a good idea of the Heritage sound. That’s because Bob didn’t settle for a cheap element in a beautiful enclosure. The Heritage is an excellent microphone to show off on video, due to its brightly polished chrome housing that shines like the bumper of a ’57 Chevy.

I could type more and tell you about its nice cardioid pattern, solid mount, integrated blast filter and shock mount – not to mention the humbucking coil for RF rejection, but let’s have a look and listen in!

The new Cinema Display and processing rack are in view.

After a lot of soldering and cable re-routing, Studio1A is a little more video friendly. It’s hard to turn an audio guy to video. However, I have to admit that even an SD show has the potential to bring a whole new dimension to product demos.

The main racks are now powered by Panamax UPS and power protection. The real time, multi-function displays on these units are great. The piece of mind is even better, knowing that pricey gear is protected by the best. By glancing at the panels, I get a constant readout of line voltage, switching and battery capacity/estimated load. The Panamax MB1000′s also interface via PC using USB. More coming up on the MB1000′s.

A real surprise is lighting. The entire studio feels like daylight with our BlueMax 70 watt lighting from full spectrum solutions. At 5900 degrees kelvin, the color temperature is perfect. Continuously variable intensity, from 20-100% gives us endless possibilities for tweaking. The best part is that these are compact floor lights that blend right in! No huge umbrellas, tripods or diffusers.

The Heil PR-781 dynamic microphone.

An unlikely combination of professional components and construction, with design criteria for amateur radio make a very interesting sound.

The Heil PR-781 is a hidden gem for studio production, voiceovers and Podcasting/New Media. At record time, the 781 is available for a little more than half the price of a PR-40. It certainly isn’t a replacement for the PR-40, but it’s a great general purpose dynamic.

The high end is not as crisp (nor was it designed to be) as the 40, but it compares quite well with other sub-$200 broadcast mics. The 781 is a no-frills performer. Included is a standard boom/stand mount. Physically, the 781 is a little shorter than the 30 and 40 with its unique ‘bottle’ shape.

At a time when budgets are tight, the 781 stands out as an excellent value.

Have a look and listen to the Heil PR-781!
